Lake IJssel (IJsselmeer) is the largest lake of the Netherlands, separated from the Wadden Sea by the Afsluitdijk.
Easily accessible via the sluices in the Afsluitdijk, a sailing trip over this beautiful lake, known for her many fishing villages and great nostalgic feel, always ranks high with our guests.

THE IJSSELMEER

When 1932 saw the completion of the Afsluitdijk, a part of the then Southern Sea (Zuiderzee) got closed off and Lake IJssel was born.
Named after the river IJssel flowing into the lake, it borders the provinces of Flevoland, North Holland and Friesland.
In 1986, three polders in Lake IJssel created the province of Flevoland, the twelfth province of the Netherlands.

Due to the shallowness of the IJsselmeer, the Markermeer and the bordering lakes, its cities and fishing villages remained mostly unspoilt and have many historical buildings.
All having a rich history in fishing, the many villages along the coast have kept their authentic identity.
Villages like, for example, Enkhuizen, Medemblik and Makkum show you how this trade is still incorpated in daily life today.
Each village will proudly take you on a journey through time, with numerous sights and museums, such as the Southern Sea Museum (Zuiderzeemuseum) and castle Radboud, telling their story.

Our tips to add to your sailing trip on Lake IJssel?
We recommend eating fried fish in Urk and taking a picture in traditional Dutch costume.
Or how about docking in the township of Laaxum to visit the smallest port of Europe!
