The name Galamadammen derives from the Galama family; a family with a link to the location dating back to the year 1100. In 1628, the family gained the rights to charge toll on the busy intersection of roads and water. We now know them as the N359 and the Johan Friso Canal. Where the canal and the highway meet, since 2007 stands the Galamadammen Aquaduct. Construction of the aquaduct made the existing bridge unnecessary, which turned out to be beneficial for the increasing flow of traffic. As a tavern, the farm Galama Dammen was a popular place for locals to have a drink and meet. When the building was replaced by a modern pavilion in later years, it kept attracting a lot of guests looking for a place to hang out. Many generations have lived on the estate of Galamadammen. Today the Hotel Restaurant Galamadammen, built on the same ground where the farm used to be, is still run by a descendant of this renown family.
The port offers lots of possilities for water sports and sailing. While perfectly situated near Lake IJssel and the Frisian Lakes, it is an ideal starting point for an exciting sailing vacation in the Netherlands. With a capacity for 210 ships, the harbour is a favoured spot for tourists and sailing fanatics. Clean and large sanitary facilities add to your comfort and you can even take a dip in the swimming pool.
